The book thief Symbols

“First the colours. Then the humans.” This quote at the start of the book the book thief by the narrator states that he see’s colour before he see’s people. This gives me the impression that the narrator sees that colour is much more important to him and therefore the book than people. This tells me that the author is going to use colours in this book to give greater meaning to the story as the narrator see’s them as being more important to the book than people. An example may be that the narrator uses the colour red to further reference death, danger, and blood.

  1. This is good. Putting colour above people shows the alien nature of the character of death. I was thinking, one possible purpose for this might be to allow us to imagine that the narrator is impartial, objective? If this is true, how has Zusak used this to the benefit of the ideas he’s trying to convey?
